| Every sunrise is a reminder of the potential that lies ahead |
There’s a deep stirring within me, as if life is urging me toward something greater. That persistent question, "What is my purpose?" has set me on a remarkable journey; one that’s both thrilling and deeply meaningful. I’m sure you’ve felt it too at some point. It’s a question we all encounter, as God has created us to yearn for something beyond ourselves, something that isn’t always self-serving. Often, it doesn’t come with a straightforward answer. The journey to discovering your purpose is personal and unique, often evolving as you grow and change. Sometimes, it starts with a small moment, a kind gesture, a change in routine, or simply asking, "God, what would You have me do today?" It’s not about having everything figured out right away, but about taking small, meaningful steps every day.
With that in mind, here are some practical steps to help you uncover your purpose, one day at a time.
You Have to Want It!
It all begins with desire. You need to truly want to fulfill your God-given purpose here on earth. In Matthew 7:7, we are reminded: "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you." This deep longing inside can be the catalyst that leads you to seek God's guidance in your life. Get intentional about seeking and following your purpose.
Self-Reflection
Self-reflection is a crucial part of uncovering your purpose. It helps you understand what truly matters to you and gives you insight into your strengths and passions. Here are some ways to deepen your self-reflection:
- Journaling: Begin a journaling practice where you can freely write about your thoughts, emotions, and experiences. Setting aside time regularly will help you track your journey. Read about The Power of Journaling: Discover Your God-Given Purpose and Deepen Your Faith
- Identify your values: Reflect on the values that are most important in your life. These core principles will guide you in the direction you want to go.
- Moments of joy: Think back to moments when you felt truly happy and fulfilled. What were you doing? These experiences often point toward your passions. Reflecting on past experiences can also reveal your purpose. Consider the challenges you’ve overcome; often, the lessons learned during tough times are clues to your strengths and purpose.
- Dreams and aspirations: Consider your long-held dreams. What have you always wanted to pursue? Sometimes, these dreams reveal insights into your purpose.
- Prayer and meditation: Spend time in prayer and meditation on the word of God. Ask God to reveal His purpose for your life. Meditate on scriptures like Psalm 139:13-16, which remind you that you are uniquely created by God.
- Seek perspectives: Have conversations with trusted friends or family members about your strengths. Their outside perspective can often reveal things about yourself that you might overlook.
- Create a vision board: Visualizing your goals can be powerful. Create a vision board filled with words and images that reflect your aspirations and keep it in sight to stay inspired.
Write Down Your Interests
Start by making a list of activities that energize and excite you. What makes you feel alive? For instance, I love capturing beautiful sunrises. It invigorates my spirit and sets the tone for my day. Write down the things you enjoy and the skills you excel in. Sometimes, friends and family may even point out strengths you hadn’t noticed in yourself.
Seek Guidance and Mentorship
Proverbs 27:17 says, "Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another." Finding mentors or seeking guidance from those you admire can be invaluable. Many people are willing to share their experiences and help guide you on your journey. Surround yourself with wise and supportive individuals who can offer encouragement and insights.
Consider joining groups or communities where you can meet like-minded people. Whether it's a church group, a professional network, or a hobby group, surrounding yourself with people who share your interests can be incredibly motivating.
Goal Setting
Setting goals helps provide direction and keeps you focused. Break down your vision into achievable steps, and don’t be afraid to adjust as you go.
- Start small: Take actionable steps daily. This could be enrolling in a class, attending a workshop, or networking with people who share your passions.
- Define your goals: Write down both short- and long-term goals, then break them into manageable tasks to avoid feeling overwhelmed.
- Aim for daily growth: Make it a point to learn something new every day, whether through reading, online courses, or conversations with others.
As you pursue your goals, stay flexible. Your understanding of your purpose will evolve, and that’s a good thing; it means you’re growing. Keep seeking God's guidance throughout the process.

Submission to God
Submission is the recognition that God is the author and finisher of our faith. Anything we accomplish in life ultimately flows from Him. James 4:7 tells us, "Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you." True submission means aligning yourself with God's plan and trusting that He created you for a unique purpose.
When you submit to God, you acknowledge that your life and purpose are in His hands. He knows the path better than you do, and through submission, you allow Him to lead, heal, and refine you. This journey might involve letting go of fears and doubts, but trust that God’s plan is greater than anything you could imagine. It may be uncomfortable at times, but it is often through these moments of vulnerability that you grow the most. Allow God to heal and mold you into the person He has called you to be. This process may not always be easy, but it will shape you into someone stronger, wiser, and more aligned with your purpose.
I know these steps may seem like a lot, but I promise they’re not overwhelming. Our journeys are all different, and God, in His infinite wisdom, can use anything to guide us toward His will for our lives. My story may not look like yours, and that’s okay. It’s this uniqueness that allows us to share, learn from one another, and encourage each other.
Remember, it’s perfectly fine to take your time. Every small step you take is progress toward discovering the life you’re meant to lead. For more insights, check out my earlier posts.
